Psychological Traits of Great Leaders

You've seen good leaders, and you've seen bad! What's in the mind of a great leader?

This week, let's take a quick look at the psychological traits that are associated with effective leadership. Some of the key psychological traits of good leaders include:

  1. Emotional Intelligence (EI): Good leaders possess a high degree of emotional intelligence, which enables them to effectively manage their own emotions as well as those of others. This includes the ability to understand and manage their own emotions, read and respond to the emotions of others, and build positive relationships with team members.

  2. Self-awareness: A good understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses, and are aware of how their actions and decisions may impact others. This enables them to make more informed decisions and manage their own behavior effectively.

  3. Self-regulation: Great leaders are able to control their impulses and remain calm in stressful situations. This allows them to make thoughtful decisions, rather than reacting impulsively.

  4. Motivation: Good leaders are highly motivated and inspire others to be motivated as well. They have a clear vision and the drive to achieve their goals.

  5. Empathy: The ability to understand and relate to the feelings and perspectives of others. This allows them to build positive relationships with team members, understand their needs and concerns, and respond appropriately.

  6. Resilience: Good leaders can bounce back from adversity and maintain a positive attitude in the face of challenges.

  7. Adaptability: The ability to adapt to changing circumstances and are open to new ideas and perspectives.

It's worth noting that no one person will possess all these traits to the same degree, and also that while these traits may be innate they can also be developed over time. Additionally, what works as a leader in one situation or organization may not work in another. Different leadership styles, may require different traits to be effective.
